SOME ENCHANTED EVENING…MY PARENTS LOVE STORY

Some Enchanted Evening Pics page1

My parents, John and Dori met on New Year’s Eve, many moons ago in the romantic Bahamas. They were both invited to a New Year’s Eve Party. My father wore black tuxedo pants, white dress shirt, bow tie, cummerbund and a cream dinner jacket.

Some Enchanted Evening_Page_2My Father’s cummerbund, bow tie and cuff links purchased in the Bahamas.  Watch: Birks.

He caught my mother’s beautiful brown eyes which were filled with tears as she was thinking of a lost love, across a crowded room just a few moments before New Year’s…he was enchanted by this woman who looked so sad at this time. Little did he know that one of his friends, Betine had arranged for them to meet on this special evening. She had told my mother that she had a handsome English friend to introduce her to. My father was told nothing…he did not need to be introduced as he had already noticed her across that crowded room…and, was determined to meet her.

She was wearing this dress, yes, I kept and treasured it all these years…strapless, black netting with gold dots. It was meant to be and they met and fell madly in love.

Some Enchanted Evening_Page_3

My mother’s purse – vintage Birks.  Jewellery: antique amethyst purchased in the Bahamas.  Shoes: Michael Kors belonging to Susan.

They loved dressing up on special occasions and New Year’s Eve was always extra romantic and memorable for them.

They lived for each other and my sister, Andrea and I; it was a magical childhood in the Bahamas…swimming in the family pool, boating to Rose Island in my father’s boat “Kismet”, travelling to England by sea and North Carolina. They read poetry to each other in my father’s den. Had cocktail hour most nights when my father would take off his business suit and change and my mother was always in something long.

We were not allowed into their beautiful living room overlooking the patio, kidney shaped swimming pool and orchards for the first half hour, which was just for them.  I sometimes made little hors d’ oeuvres for them.

Some Enchanted Evening_Page_4

My sister moved away, and then I did and finally they retired to Niagara Falls where their love story continued until they both passed away.

I got my love of fashion, clothes, poetry and writing from my mother and my love of current events and history from my father.

They loved Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and each other!

A toast to you, Mummy and Daddy, you will always be the wind beneath my wings.

I FEEL PRETTY…OH SO PRETTY

Pictures Cropped2a

With so many brides to be and another popular engagement month coming up in December, I wanted to touch on some beauty tips and essentials for that Important Day…The Wedding.

Tip from The Wedding Lady™

Stay true to yourself.  I feel most brides are radiant on their wedding day, when they look natural. Makeup should enhance, rather than mask the woman wearing it.

MAKEUP:

Nadia Albana of Nadia Albano Style Inc., says “Consultation is vital for brides and a trial run before the wedding to ensure the bride is comfortable about her choice and sees the finished product.”  “Trendy and what is in style, does not work for everyone. You have to select the ‘right look’ for your hair type”.   Nadia goes on to say “Do not do hair colour right before the wedding or any changes”.

Trends by Nadia…braids are very popular, low, to side to centre to accent the style the bride has chosen. Hair extensions continue to be very popular. Nadia also mentioned that many brides will pay the extra and change hairstyle and makeup for reception.

scan0142Vanessa Westerager of Nadia Albano Style Inc., says “It is important to source out your makeup artist ahead of time and have a consultation and trial”. She also goes on to say “Let your makeup artist know about any allergies, look at photos of makeup applications. Remember to bring makeup blotting sheets, powder, and lipstick to reception”.

Jasmine Hoffman:  Jasmine uses top of the line products such as Shu, Vemura, Makeup Forever, Mac and Stilla cosmetics to make for a flawless look that is perfect for weddings. “After all, your makeup is the ultimate artistic expression and you should shine your best too.”

Tip from The Wedding Lady™

  • Book way ahead of time for trials and perhaps arrange this when you are going out that night and also book Wedding Day ahead of time.

OH LA LA…LASHES

The eyes are the first thing people see when looking at you. Your eyes appear bigger, brighter and more accentuated.

The main difference between synthetic and mink lashes is in the quality. Because mink is 100% natural fur, it provides a natural shine, is super lightweight and flexible and gives a feather like look. Whereas synthetic eyelashes are cheaper, irritating to the eye, unnatural when worn, and can feel a lot heavier than mink lashes” quotes Mink Lash Boutique.

PERFECT BROWS:

Beautiful groomed eyebrows should be on the Must Have list for brides.  Eyebrows are one of the most important features on a woman’s face. They enhance the shape of your eyes and frame your face. Good brows make you look rested, fresh healthy and so attractive.  Following are some recommended timelines:

  • Six months before your wedding you should go to a professional brow expert or company like Brow Bar if you want to grow your lashes out or change the shape and then closer to wedding day they will do the final appointment;
  • Your makeup artist should be able to fill brows in correctly;
  • Beautiful filled in brows also really make a difference in photos and make your eyes pop; and
  • Do not leave your brows to the last minute.

PEDICURES AND MANICURES:

New in town Joy Ride in Kitsilano.  All organic products, 350 colours to select from.

A JOYFUL ESCAPE FROM THE EVERYDAY:  Joyride is a modern nail studio providing an experience that’s equal parts style and service, without skimping on the details. Think all-natural, organic body products, hard-to-find polish brands and colours, iPads at every seat, and a drink menu featuring fresh-pressed juices and hand-crafted coffees, all delivered by a team that’s talented, trained and sharp as a tack.

Recently I experienced Four Seasons Nails & Spa in West Vancouver and was very impressed with the service and friendly staff.  They welcome bridal parties and have a private room downstairs for small groups to be pampered!

PRE-WEDDING FITNESS

You want to look and feel your absolute best when you walk down the aisle. Do not wait until six months before the wedding – I suggest a good year.  Find the best location for fitness or bootcamp that works for you. Perhaps have your wedding party join with you and you can all reap the benefits of exercising and supporting each other.

Perhaps you may want to hire a personal coach to work with you and set you on a plan to feel and look your very best…you can set realistic expectations…don’t crash diet…exercise and work out for energy and to relieve wedding planning stress in order to reach your set goals.

You want to feel confident and proud of the hard work you have done and look stunning in your wedding gown.  Remember all eyes will be on you!

Having grown up and lived in the Bahamas for many years and planning my Maui weddings, I love jewellery with sea shells, starfish, sand dollars and turquoise.  When writing this posting there was only one jewellery designer that came to mind and that was Catherine Weitzman, based in Oahu, Hawaii.

Jellery Tamplate2

Catherine has always had an attraction to jewellery and an innate love of working with her hands.  It wasn’t until Catherine and husband and co-creator Scott Diamond returned from a five-year adventure around the globe that she would be ready to start her signature line of handmade jewelry.  She and her husband built a studio in Hawaii where all the jewellery is still handmade today.

The designs are an integration of Catherine’s experiences: they are deeply informed by her travels, her childhood in the city, her love of nature and water, and the way a single piece of jewellery connects the designer, the hands that made it, and the person who sees it, wears it and makes it her own.

Weitzman LogoI love showcasing some of her beautiful creations that can be purchased here in Vancouver, BC at Blue Ruby in their many locations and Edgewood Farm in Quesnel, BC and in selected stores in Hawaii.

“I am always thinking about bringing glamorous fashion and style to every aspect of a woman’s life”, says Carolina Herrera. “The beach or pool should be just another moment to be chic”. With her new swimwear line, the designer has given us a hand in achieving the ultimate in poolside glamour. Think scoop-back one-pieces and high-waisted bikinis in bright, classic Herrera prints drawn from her archives. “These whimsical prints lend themselves to warm weather destinations, which is why I felt it was the right time to design swimwear”. Swimco is a family run company, started 40 years ago in Calgary, Alberta by current Swimco President Lori Bacon’s mother, Corinne.  Her goal was to treat all of our customers as our friends, and that is the approach that we take when we help our customers find a swimsuit that helps them feel their best.  The reason behind Swimco remains the same, to help customers find the right fit, to help them Feel Good Half Naked.

For honeymoons on the beach:

  • Bring more than one suit!  The last thing you want is to be bored with your outfits on the beach, plus rotating between suits will prevent too much wear and tear.
  • Definitely rinse your suits and clean with swimwear cleaner to keep the colour of your suit vibrant and the fit from losing its shape.
  • Think versatility – to keep packing light, go for multi-functional pieces like surf capris that can also work for beach yoga, or sleek one pieces that when paired with a sarong can go from poolside to cocktails.

HAIR and MAKUP CARE ON HONEYMOON:

  • Treat hair with oil-infused texture sprays.
  • Surf Infusion by BumbleandBumble.com and Sun Bum.
  • Beach Formula Sea Spray…Trustthebum.
  • Spray sunscreen-infused face mists are popular to be sprayed over makeup, even when you are not in the sun. Coola SPF 30 Organic Makeup setting spray Coolasuncare.com.

Happy Honeymooning to all…The Wedding Lady!

Christine Morton, Lingerie Designer Extraordinaire…

Christine2015Final5X7HD

“I love to make women look and feel beautiful”

I (the Wedding Lady) first met Christine thirty years ago when I was promoting a new magazine and she had agreed to be featured showcasing her exclusive Bridal Wear on the cover and inside the magazine.

We have remained friends ever since and have worked together on fashion shows and many promotions. I have seen her become so very famous worldwide, but stay humble and the lovely person she was all those years ago. Christine still lights up when she talks about a creative new piece or collection, and loves working with luxury fabrics and beautiful laces and creating must haves for the woman who loves the very finest in silk lingerie. I love to see my bride’s expressions when they first experience trying on a piece of Christine Lingerie. Christine is always available to chat and find the just right selection and fit for their special trousseau.

It all started when she used to tidy up her grandmother’s drawers as a young child. Christine told me that she loved anything lace and was intrigued by the textures of silk and other fabrics and buttons.  Little did Christine know that her dreams of exquisite lace and luxurious silks would lead to the extremely sought after lingerie and loungewear designer she is today.

Christine Wedding Lingerie l. 2015 Christine began making lingerie, and then that led into creating antique and lace blouses and then she added luminous and silhouette skirts to the blouses creating one of a kind dream wedding gowns with fabulous handmade roses and lace.

I can always tell a Christine piece because of the beautiful styling, attention to the smallest detail and above all the silk. The colours are like an artist’s pallet with soft pastels, as well as the deep rich jewel tones.  As per Christine’s philosophy “….that the prints are exclusive, the silks are the softest, the lace is the finest and the most delicate, so that each piece is a creation of beauty. ”  The designs blend classic and vintage-inspired cuts and styles.  You can now find street-worthy loungewear and kimonos in her collection.  “You put that on with your jeans and t-shirt, and it looks fabulous.  It’s a whole look.”

Christine4I can remember going to Christine’s Designer Studio on Powell Street, the day before my bride’s wedding in order to pick up a pair of silk pajamas for her to lounge in prior to getting dressed on the wedding day. Oprah Winfrey of course wore them on one of her O Magazine covers. Not to mention other celebrities, Catherine Zeta Jones, Gwyneth Paltrow, Diana Krall, Christina Hendricks and Katie Homes, just to name a few.

2014christine-217Another memory is meeting with Christine in her Design Studio to discuss a surprise lingerie tea I was arranging for one of my clients in Christine’s actual show room. I saw Christine putting photos of her latest designs in silk envelopes, hand made by her amazing team of sewers.  Christine was sending these out to Neiman Marcus, Holts etc…. Just another Christine touch!

Other well-known brides add touches of pink in their gowns, while others opt for all pink:

  • Gwen Steffani, had rock n’ roll edges of pink and had the bottom of her John Galliano gown dip dyed in hot pick.
  • Portia de Rossi wore a stunning Zaz Posen halter gown with a full ballerina pink skirt.
  • Jessica Biel went all pink in her Giambattista Valli pink design.

Decide if a Destination Wedding is right for you:

  • Save the Date postcards or boarding passes are fun;
  • Also save the date in a bottle.

Mind Mother Nature:

  • Don’t just assume weather is gorgeous year-round.  Check out when the hurricane seasons are in Caribbean, rainy season in Hawaii.  Europe can be uncomfortably hot in July and August.

Open a Registry at your Local Travel Agent and guests can contribute towards your honeymoon as another option to actual wedding gift.

Create a Wedding Website with tips on:

Weddings In Paris – Part 2

At long last…Part 2!

Notes from the Wedding Lady…

  • Fresh flowers are worn in the hair, sometimes one or two, but often a garland of flowers on crown of head with larger blooms.
  • Bridal bouquets are very loose and bound together with exquisite ribbon or lace form the gown.  Many brides are having small bouquets almost nosegay size, with very dainty flowers all one colour so as not to take away from the style of the gown.
  • If gown is very simple in design and fabric, the bouquet can be larger and trailing with mixed flowers, although whites and greens are still very popular.

Eiffle Tower blackwhite

  • I was told in Paris “makeup is all very natural madame and all about the eyes”.
  • Pale lipstick is popular or very deep crimson/red.  Soft blush on the face and sometimes “a bit of sparkle”.
  • Eyes are the statement and are done very detailed, always with lashes and dramatic with shading in all the right places.
  • They use a lot of makeup but want the look to be natural and light.

Weddings in Paris – Part 1

Paris-Wedding-Dresses

Notes from the Wedding Lady {on location in Paris, France}

  • Happy to see bridal gowns in all sizes.
  • White still the most popular for brides along with off white.
  • Lace is still very popular for gowns in all the right places.
  • Many first time brides opting to make a statement in red, gold or various shades of pink
  • Second time or mature brides wearing white whether it be all lace pants with matching lace blazer in all colors as well as white or tea color.
  • Jewelled belts very popular in pastel colors as well as solid white or cream.
  • Veils will always be a must for some brides, but also other head pieces are trending as seen in photos above.
  • Bridal gowns are very slim sheath style with long trains or shorter. As well as mermaid style and the ball gown shape. You see tea length gowns, long slip gowns with elaborate bolero jackets or capes. Many whimsical short dresses and A-line Jackie Kennedy type short dresses with or without sleeves.
  • Bridal party do not seem to wear all the same color or style. They mix it up more. All in different styles and colors.Paris-Wedding-Dresses-Part-2
  • Traditional pearls are still popular but also roped of diamonds and pearls in the hair you see and larger sparkling earrings and always a bracelet.

It was wonderful to see a bride stop traffic in the busy Champs-Elysees with her groom posing as she crossed the roads and her photographs yelling instructions as they shot in front and behind with horns blazing.

I also saw another bride being photographed along the River Seine…wearing a long trailing white gown and her husband in white slacks, white open shirt and sky blue blazer whilst bride had a matching sash around her waist…….

Tune in for Weddings in Paris – Part 2.

Pretty in Pink Shower

It was a Pretty in Pink Bridal Shower for the Blushing Bride to be, Caroline, (future daughter in law to The Wedding Lady).

The bride arrived in a lovely white dress with a chunky pink necklace, and was handed a flute of Champagne as she walked into a room decorated with whites and all shades of pinks…

The cake was decorated in roses in soft tones of pinks with the words “Showers of Wishes” to the soon to be Mrs.

Gourmet light and dark pink jelly beans, pink wafers. and strawberry macaroons graced a table. The pink lemonade was nestled in a table dressed in cotton candy pink fabric as was the table laden with pink pinwheel and other fancy sandwiches. delicious dips, veggies, and more.

The beautifully wrapped presents were opened and the bride was given a sparkling silver and pink head crown to wear. Following this she was presented and fitted, with a bikini top adorned with ribbons and streamers taken from the many gifts.

If you’re planning a wedding in Maui, and you’re unsure of how to narrow down your favorite foods for the reception, let this list help you out! As a Maui Wedding Planner, known as The Wedding Lady, I have a few tips to share on the best types of foods to serve at a beach-side wedding!

Spectacular Maui wedding planner, The Wedding Lady’s Reception Food Tips:

  1. Fresh, local foods – Seafood, coconut, and other local foods make the best exotic and memorable fare!
  2. Finger foods – Foods that are easy to pick up means that they are easy for quick socialization!
  3. Clean foods – Remember, everyone is in their nice clothing on your big day, so don’t provide barbeque wings – if you must have something like this, do boneless and serve it with toothpicks or nice cocktail forks!
  4. Flavorful foods – Because these foods are small and dainty, they want to have as much flavor as they can with each small bite!

Top 5 Reasons to Hire a Maui Wedding Planner

Every bride dreams of a wedding in beautiful Maui! It may seem impossible, but as a Maui Wedding Planner, I can assure you that it is not! In fact, a wedding in Maui one of the most beautiful and worthwhile weddings a beautiful bride could have! As a Maui Wedding Planner, I’d like to share some reasons on how and why you should get married in Maui with a Maui Wedding Planner!

Top 5 Reasons to Hire a Maui Wedding Planner

  1. Experience & Familiarity: When a bride wants to get married in a foreign place she’s never been to, it can seem impossible for her to organize such a beautiful gala. Hiring a Maui Wedding Planner, such as myself, will allow you to feel confident that everything in Maui is planned to your liking! Having planned weddings for the past 25 years, I know everything there is to know about Maui and destination wedding planning; I know the best locations, venues, honeymoon locations, and fun spots, so you and your groom can have the best time possible!
  2. Busy Lifestyles: Planning a wedding on your own can quickly turn into a full time job, and it’s even harder when you’re planning a long-distance wedding! You already have one full time job; there’s barely room for another! Not only will you be assembling your guest list of 50+ people, you’ll be designing, writing, creating, printing, sealing, and mailing 50+ invitations, finding affordable tickets to Maui for those 50 guests, finding table and chair suppliers for 50+ guests, scoping out venues that will seat that many guests and still remain inside your budget, finding a florist that will assemble 100+ flowers and remain inside of your color scheme, finding the perfect cake baker, making tough decisions that you and your future husband are split on, finding the perfect catering service that is worth the money, and so many more tasks to follow! Let a Maui Wedding Planner take over. As a Maui Wedding Planner myself, I know all of the best places in Maui and all of the best plane ticket deals! Let me coordinate your flights and you wedding – your big day should be about you and you alone!
  3. Focus: Maui weddings are so exciting, and there is so much to do on Maui once you get there! Like any vacation, you’ll want to plan every step on the island! Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, there is a lot to see and do on Maui, and you can easily get bogged down with small details. Wedding Planners are there to point you in the right direction, allowing you to take care of the right priorities first, and then leave the small details for later.
  4. Vendor Loyalty & Your budget: A Maui Wedding is already pricey in itself, but let’s say you can save at least $4,000 by booking a Maui Wedding Planner. Wedding Planners are full of tricks and surprises, and having been in the business for 25 years, I have a nice amount of tricks! Through a wedding planner, you’ll be able to get deep discounts on venues, vendors, and events that you would rarely be able to get on your own! Both your heart and wallet should be happy on your wedding day!
  5. Stress-free Wedding: No bride should be worrying about things at the last minute! This is the time for the bride to reflect on her life with her groom, and look forward to looking into his eyes as she makes her way down the aisle. By booking a wedding planner, she’ll be able to! Wedding planners become wedding coordinators on the wedding day, checking every small detail and ensuring that everything is in order, so the bride doesn’t have to! Doesn’t that sound lovely?

Top 5 Reasons to Hire a Vancouver Wedding Planner

Every bride goes through the struggle of trying to decide if they need a wedding planner, and here in Vancouver, it’s no different. The moment the engagement ring slips on the finger of a blushing bride-to-be, her mind starts thinking of all the extravagant dreams she’s had about her big wedding day over the course of her life. Suddenly, there’s not enough time to get it all together or budget worries seep in, and I don’t have to mention the dozens of vendors the bride will have to keep up with! Planning a social gathering for 150+ is a new adventure for most brides, and this can quickly become a daunting experience, rather than the most fun experience of your life!

s&s sample16

All brides should enjoy the time that leads up to their wedding, as it is the start and foundation of their new life! The following list will cover the top five reasons why you should hire a Wedding Planner in Vancouver:

  1. Busy Lifestyles: Planning a wedding on your own can quickly turn into a full time job, and when you already have one full time job, there’s barely room for another! Not only will you be assembling your guest list of 100+ people, you’ll be designing, writing, creating, printing, sealing, and mailing 100+ invitations, finding table and chair suppliers for 100+ guests, scoping out venues that will seat that many guests and still remain inside your budget, finding a florist that will assemble 100+ flowers and remain inside of your color scheme, finding the perfect cake baker, making tough decisions that you and your future husband are split on, finding the perfect catering service that is worth the money, and so many more tasks to follow! You’ll be exhausted before the first month is over! Not to mention the stress that would be put on your relationship! Let me, The Wedding Lady – Wedding Planner in Vancouver take all of that stress off of your back and leave you to the fun decisions, like tasting the cakes!
  2. Focus: At first, you wanted a beautiful, lace wedding, but now you’ve just spotted this gorgeous vintage wedding on Pinterest. With all of the great websites and blogs on the internet, it’s easy for a bride to become overwhelmed and confused. That’s where a wedding planner steps in! Wedding planners have the experience needed to know the best things to be done in what order and at what time. My job as a Vancouver Wedding Planner is to keep things simple, personalize, and organized.
  3. The Tie Breaker: Sometimes, it’s hard to make that final decision, whether it’s something small like meatballs or quiche or large like venue or beach; you’ve dreamed of both as a child, and now it’s come down to one over the other, and you just can’t do it. As The Wedding Lady, Vancouver Wedding Planner, it is my job to help with that decision! With my 25 years of experience, I’ll know exactly what will work with your budget and help you make those difficult decisions.
  4. Budget & Loyalty: Budget is the big word in weddings, and luckily, a wedding planner has trade secrets! After 25 years in the wedding planning business, I, as well as many other wedding planners, have long standing loyalty with vendors. This means you’ll get everything you need for your wedding at a much more affordable cost! You and your wallet will happy on your wedding day!
  5. Stressfree & Happy: Stress can turn the happiest moment of your life to the most sour moment of your life; it can turn your relationship into a battlefield and render your wedding exhausting. Many brides find that their excitement at the beginning of planning has dwindled down to the phrase, “I can’t wait until this is all over.” I believe that no bride should feel like that about any part of their wedding planning process; after all, women, is that how you’ve dreamed of your wedding as a child? Not at all! A wedding planner is there to take all of that stress off of you, allowing you to have the time of your life! On the big day, the wedding planner turns into the wedding coordinator, allowing you to keep your eyes strictly on your prize!
